The Storm

When the lights came up at Magic Mike Siobhan, Kristen, and I pulled out our phones and noticed we had tons of text messages..

“Are you ok?”

“Stay where you are”

“Please call and let me know you are ok”

“Be careful if you are not at home”

“Do you have electricity? Please call me if you need anything at all.”

Naturally our first reaction was confusion. The movie had been loud and fun. The electricity had not flickered. Little did we know what was waiting outside. We noticed that branches and debris were scattered all over the roads. After asking around we learned a violent wind storm had hit the city. I arrived home and would not really know the full impact until the sun came up.

It was H O T here Saturday morning. The house was already uncomfortable and I was truly confused as to why the electricity had been out for 13 hours. When I ventured into town for some breakfast I figured it out. I was met with bumper to bumper traffic and the aftermath. Absolutely everywhere I looked was destroyed.

There were trees and power poles snapped in half

Several trees were up-rooted and turned over, blocking streets and bringing down power lines

And homes and cars badly damaged.

Thankfully other than some minor damage and a huge mess our home escaped any major issues. However, it would be nearly 7 days before I had electricity again. With unusually high temperatures across the state it got uncomfortable pretty quickly. All of the food in the fridge and freezer was spoiled and I had no means to prepare anything. So, I had to rely on dining out for nearly every single meal. This was definitely tricky on Weight Watchers but I managed the best I could.

I also had to rely on the kindness of others in my life. I spent a few nights with Kristen and Siobhan and also had plans to head to Bryan’s parents home when the power finally returned.

And what else did I do to stay sane during this week without power??

Toted Carrie everywhere with me so she would be cool too. She even camped out in my office one day.

Bought myself some electricity free entertainment

Tried to perk myself up with some shopping

And I stayed cool by seeing movie after movie after movie..

Ted

Dark

Luckily other than Ted, all the other movies I saw were at our dollar movie theater. It was a cheap way to stay out of the heat and concentrate on something else for a bit.

Luckily, the pup and I were able to move back in to the house on Friday morning. I dropped her off and immediately started to worry about my Weigh In the following morning. I had been unable to workout and without a proper diet for an entire week. I couldnt help but wonder if I had undone all of my progress. In a few minutes I would find out.

What is the longest you have gone without electricty?

Yikes!! I’m glad you finally have power again and your house escaped major damage!!

Two times I’ve gone a week without power, both times due to wind storms. And then you realize how dependent you are on electricity!!

Whoa! I’ve never had to go without electricity for more than a couple hours I think. Even when hurricane Charlie knocked out my power it was back on as soon as I could light my candles. Movies definitely seem like a fabulous option! Air conditioning, the smell of popcorn, the face of Johnny Depp!! And Ted – oh my gosh, did you just love it? I might actually go back and see it again because I found it so freaking hysterical!

I blame Magic Mike for the power situation, FYI.
